Hamilton
Hamilton (population in 2006: 504 559) is a port city in Ontario province of Canada. It was founded by George Hamilton when he purchased Durand farm after the War of 1812; Hamilton has become a center of densely populated and industrialized area on the western shore of Lake Ontario, famous as the Golden Horseshoe. On the January 1st 2001 new Hamilton city was formed by merging the ‘old’ city with the parts of Hamilton-Wentworth. In 1981 the territory of the municipality became the ninth most populated place in Canada, and third most populated place in Ontario. Traditionally the local economy was concentrated around steel mill and heavy manufacturing industry.
During the last decade the city economy started to change its priorities in the direction of services sector, especially science and health care. Hamilton hosts Royal Botanical Gardens, Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, McMaster University and a few colleges. The Canadian Football Hall of Fame is also located in Hamilton. The city of Hamilton was founded by George Hamilton (the son of Queenston’s entrepreneur and founder, Robert Hamilton), when soon after the War of 1812 he purchased the farm assets formerly owned by James Durand, the local member of British Legislative Assembly.
Hamilton offered the lands to the Crown for the future settlement. As the city grew, a few prominent buildings were raised in the end of 19th century, including the Grand Lodge of Canada built in 1855, the public library (1890) and the Right House department store (1893). The first commercial phone service in Canada, the first telephone exchange in British Imperia and the second telephone exchange in the whole Northern America were mounted in the city in 1877 – 1878. Hamilton is situated on the western end of the Niagara Peninsula and around the western part of Lake Ontario; the major part of the city, including the part of its downtown is located on the southern shore. Hamilton is located in the geographical center of the Golden Horseshoe and approximately in the halfway between Toronto and Buffalo, New York.
The most important economic activity in Ontario is the manufacturing industries, while the Toronto-Hamilton area is the most industrialized region of the country. The area consisted of Ottawa, Ontario districts located along the western shore of Lake Ontario up to Niagara Falls with Hamilton in the center, is famous as “Golden Horseshoe” Hamilton hosts rather significant number of historical and other sights, including the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, HMCS Haida National Historic Sight (the Canada’s most famous military ship and the last ship of such class remaining in the world), Dundurn Castle (The Upper Canada’s Prime Minister residence), the Royal Botanical Gardens, The Canadian Football Hall of Fame, the African Lion Safari Park and the Cathedral of Christ the King. Founded in 1914, the Art Gallery of Hamilton is the third biggest public art gallery of Ontario.
The permanent collection of the Gallery consists of 8 500 works reflecting the three artistic epochs: 19th century European art, Historical Canadian Art and Contemporary Canadian art In 1930 Hamilton hosted the first Commonwealth Games that were lately named as British Empire Games. This event was the first major international sport event in Canada, and the Hamilton bid to host the Commonwealth Games was also considered in 2010, but it failed and the victory was given to New Delhi in India.
